the clock machine turns you on: volume 2 released october 2008 TWO CDs FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!!! this is a double cd set of 32 malicious classics [eleven unreleased] all gently sewn together by the orb... and it’s yours for only a tenner!!! here’s the official blurb courtesy of our good friend mr kris needs: “Malicious Damage is one of the few record labels to emerge from the late 70s independent explosion to not only survive but still operate in the original spirit of operating outside of the corporations and business straitjackets. With no allegiance to boardrooms the label has been able to fire out a staggeringly diverse array of musical styles and personal visions while keeping abreast of modern technology to assist in distribution and, via the website, invoking an essential feeling that those recording for and supporting the label are involved in some kind of close-knit, even inspirational, crusade for the right of artists to have their say where otherwise they might not get a chance. It comes as little surprise to find that Dr Alex Paterson, who first became involved with the label at its inception whilst a roadie for founding fathers Killing Joke and singing with his band Bloodsport, is still heavily involved, regularly appearing in label projects the Transit Kings with Jimmy Cauty, Rootmasters with Nina Walsh and most recently with studio wizard Dom Beken as High Frequency Bandwidth, plus several special voyages by The Orb, of course. Not content with a ‘normal’ compilation, Alex and Dom have hallucinogenically mixed up two CDs representing the current state of M.D.’s amazing catalogue. After kicking off with Killing Joke’s seminal early single Turn To Red, and Bloodsport pummelling the Sex Pistols’ Bodies they weave together the dubbed and dreamy [Youth & Simon Tong’s new Transmission project, Analogue Mindfield, SMARTYR ? with the late Paul Raven RIP, Norway’s N.I.C. with former PiL guitarist Keith Levene, Teledubgnosis from the USA, Sweden’s Beatundercontrol], surreal-acoustic [South London blues-picker Bob Meyer, ethereal folkstress Nina Walsh, Canola Tenderfoot], audacious oddities [Caned & Able, Belka & Strelka, Japan’s The Sun Paulo] and more familiar names like Shriekback, Headcount and The Orb from the Orbsessions series. There’s also tastes of things to come with the Paterson soul chant of H.F.B.’s High Five Brother [Malicious Monitor] and Vertical Smile ? Youth’s explosive new disco-punk outfit. The set is a stunning affirmation of a label which has stuck to its guns and released what it damn well wants, flying the flag for the original independent spirit and relentlessly throwing up stunning musical cross-pollinations shot through with dub, guts and a healthy dose of humour and madness. This is one malicious clock which shows no sign of winding down." | TRANSMSSION | SUBLIMITY | released october 2008 this is one amazing ride from a four-headed creative monster on heat that manages to blend musical beauty, torrential passion and sheer malevolence, sometimes in the space of one track... First sound on opening track Albion is Youth’s unmistakable heaving bass before Big Paul Ferguson steams in with the heaviest drums in the business. Once the original Killing Joke rhythm section is underway on a crunching post-punk funk vamp, Simon Tong’s guitar appears in shrapnel clusters lashed by Tim Bran’s unearthly synth. Musical fireworks might be expected from a line-up like this and Sublimity, the second album by Transmission, doesn’t disappoint. The pedigree is impeccable: Youth’s production credentials, his time with Paul in the Joke before ahead-of-its-time superfunk ensemble Brilliant. Simon’s stint in the Verve line-up which made Urban Hymns then Gorillaz and Damon Albarn and Paul Simenon’s The Good, The Bad & The Queen. Dreadzone co-founder Tim Bran plays with Subsonar and The Orb. The group started gestating after Youth and Simon became friends during the Urban Hymns sessions, which the former co-produced. Tim entered the fray then, Paul in Spring 2005 after he met Youth at a Malicious Damage party and heard some demos. Three months later they recorded debut album Beyond Light in three days at London’s legendary Olympic studios. With the line-up always busy on respective other projects it’s taken nearly two years to emerge with a follow-up but the results are a controlled explosion of disparate musical styles often reaching jawdropping peaks, like the emotional skyscraper of Triple Threat and its mix of dubbed-out effects, guitar resonance and Paul’s inimitable tribal rumble. Rarely does a band manage to blend musical beauty, torrential passion and sheer malevolence, sometimes in the space of one track, influences running riot, assimilated into the group’s mass organic psyche before being spewed out in glorious technicolour. For instance, cinematic Giorgio Moroder melodies on the atmospheric Dance Alone, keening psychedelia on the stately You Hold The Fire, Bo Diddley beats under the spiralling guitars of Goodbye Old Friend and Oh Sleep coming in on a classic rock guitar riff before taking off on another of the flights which seem to be this group’s trademark. On some tracks Youth adds vocals, taking Confusion in a panoramic astral rock direction with shades of Bowie while Opium Head turns into a soaring hallucino-ballad. By the mindblowing home stretch guitar-thrash of Absinthium it’s apparent that this has been one amazing ride from a four-headed creative monster on heat - a special Transmission indeed. Cargo - 16 02 07 : THE REMIX NIGHT Transmission are Youth (killing joke), Simon Tong (the good the bad and the queen), Tim Bran (dreadzone) and Paul Ferguson (killing joke). When Youth met Simon Tong they were both working together with The Verve, and in between Simon finishing sessions with Gorillaz and Blur, they sparked up a friendship and continued working together. They found themselves developing twin guitar instrumental epic soundscapes but the sound needed more to it and so Tim Bran was invited to apply some stark metallic synths and beautiful epic pianos. In spring 2005 Youth was re-united with his old Killing Joke band mate, big Paul Ferguson, when Paul heard the demos Youth had been working on it didn't take much to persuade him to stop everything and join the project and so Transmission was born. This is probably the only chance to see transmission live before the summer. You have been warned! "Vertical Smile ("just think what it looks like") is very close to my heart ? I bring an expression of the form and style of my music. I'm collaborating with two younger musicians and we are currently doing live events starting at TESCODISCO as well as EP's. I (Youth) provide bass and vocals, David Knock drums, keyboards and backing vocals, James Sedwards (from punk/ jazz/ extremist collective 'Nought') plays guitar. James hurt his hand during a particularly frenzied episode of playing guitar during a live performance with 'Nought' (so Andrew Robinson covers him at Tescodisco). (The sound) merges punk, disco and german new wave. What we want to do is rock the house, stimulate and imp.. (he mobile connection breaks up here) the audience." David added. "I was inspired by Krautrock and German new wave, Nitzer Ebb, Wolfsheim. We first played together at SOSHO a few months ago. (We seek) energy and a direct connection with the audience. My role is drummer and programmer. I'm also in 'Truck', a punk rock group with a debt to 80's sounds." http://www.tescodisco.co.uk/event.asp?id=10 According to BEING BOILED myspace: Vertical Smile is a project conceived by Youth (producer & founder bass player with Killing Joke, (1978-1982 and 1993-1996)) for 'Good Luck Studio!' (brainchild of freelance hellraiser and Freeform Five's Nick DC) during the sound check, merging punk, disco and german new wave. Since then the band have been busy recording and defining their sound in the studio. Collaborating with the likes of Robert Gorl (D.A.F), cult remix artist Freelance Hellraiser and Ben Watkins (Juno Reactor), they plan to release a single in the early part of 2007 through Malicious Damage records, with an album to follow later in the year.As well as this, they will be playing live gigs in London and Shanghai in the coming months. http://www.myspace.com/beingboiled ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[Nov 17th, 2006] New Skin, together with Art/Punk outfit 'Oki Dog' will be supporting YOUTH's new live project 'Vertical Smile'. Youth was the founder bass player who brought the dance/ dub influence to the original Killing Joke (1978-1982) and he also played with them during their early 1990's resurgence. Since then he has assumed production duties for Paul McCartney, U2, written and produced much of Verve's 'Bittersweet Symphony' plus been a major part of projects like 'The Orb', 'KLF' in addition to running his trance/ techno labels 'Butterfly' and 'Dragonfly' records. His post Killing Joke recordings include albums and hit singles with his influential bands 'Brilliant' (with a pre-KLF Jimmy Cauty), 'The Empty Quarter' (with Ben Watkins, later to become known as Juno Reactor) and others too numerous to mention here. [Dec 3rd, 2006] YOUTH, founder bass player with Killing Joke, (1978-1982 and 1993-1996), launches his new live project 'VERTICAL SMILE' at TESCODISCO's 'DARKLY LIT' night this Wednesday, (6th December), part of 'COLD MONTH'. Venue address: 43 South Molton Street. Bond Street Tube in addition to spells in Brilliant, The Empty Quarter and numerous collaborations with The Orb, KLF etc YOUTH also co-wrote and produced much of The Verve's 'Urban Hymns' (where his credits include 'Bittersweet Symphony' and 'The Drugs Don't Work'), and as a producer won/ was nominated for Brit and Grammy awards for work with artists such as Paul McCartney, U2 etc. Vertical Smile are: YOUTH - bass & vocals David Knock - drums, keyboards and backing vocals James Sedwards - guitar. (owing to a recent hand injury, at TESCODISCO James' role on guitar will be covered by Andrew Robinson) TESCODISCO LINE-UP for 'Darkly Lit' is detailed online and below: http://www.tescodisco.co.uk/event.asp?id=10 Vertical Smile’s YOUTH - Interview by Tet “I draw as often as I can, usually illustrations of sex/ death. I’m inspired by the renewal aspects of both and especially reincarnation and the wheel of life. I exhibited at Brixton Art Society with (KLF’s) Jimmy Cauty three years ago, paintings & illustrations. My ideal exhibition space would be an abattior.” Youth’s ‘poetica mystica :: kissing nettles’ was published in 2004. “(Themes in my poems are) sex & death again, massacre and facilitation of the ‘insemening’, and ‘the devotion of sufferance’, shamanic themes, constant need for renewal, turns of the wheel shaping our lives. I’m especially interested in shamanic rituals, esp. pagan traditions of the british isles.” “Magic ? is everything and nothing, it depends on the focus I have at a particular point in time. My intention with Killing Joke and The Society (Society For The Reformation Of Ancient Enchantment) is to create a space that can enhance the understanding and interpretation of the heathen. The (Society’s) ethos is to work within a community to create the space that allows creativity foremost… in gallery displays, music, dance. In themselves they may not seem magical but combined create a special spiritual place. I’m interested in how a moment can be heightened through the dramatic and initial execution of it’s contents.” “Vertical Smile (“just think what it looks like”) is very close to my heart ?
